Built around confidentiality and uptime

A law firm's most valuable asset is client trust, and most of it lives on a laptop, a file share or a cloud tenant. Lawyers in BC are bound by a duty of confidentiality under the Law Society's Code of Professional Conduct, and law firms are also organizations that handle personal information under BC's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Good IT is how those obligations are met day to day.

Clearpine Technologies is an Abbotsford managed IT provider. The discipline we apply to clinics, where personal information is regulated and downtime is immediately visible, carries over directly to legal practices.

What law firms typically need

  • Email and Microsoft 365 security. Multi-factor authentication, phishing protection, sensible mailbox permissions and conditional access. Business email compromise and payment-redirection fraud target lawyers because of the money that moves through their accounts.
  • Secure remote and mobile work. Encrypted laptops, managed devices and safe access to files from home, court or a client's office.
  • Backup you have actually tested. Client files, practice-management data and accounting records backed up to a stated recovery objective, with restores tested rather than assumed. See why backups quietly fail.
  • Practice-management and accounting platforms. A stable, patched environment for tools such as Clio, PCLaw, Actionstep or LEAP, with access controls matching who needs to see what. Trust-accounting data deserves the strongest protection in the office.
  • Cloud due diligence. Help reviewing where client data is stored, who can access it, and what the provider's security and exit terms look like, so you can document your decision.
  • Incident readiness. Logging, an incident response outline and a clear plan for who to call first if something goes wrong. Your obligations after a breach depend on the facts, so seek your own legal and insurer advice.
  • Responsive support. A named point of contact and defined response times, so a printer or login problem does not eat a billable hour.

How we work with firms

  • A short review of your current setup, with a written list of risks ranked by importance and cost
  • Fixed-scope projects for migrations, new offices and hardware refreshes
  • Ongoing managed support for users, devices, Microsoft 365, firewall and backup
  • On-site attendance across the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, plus remote support Canada-wide

We are not a law firm and do not give legal advice. We will help you document the technical controls you have in place; what the Law Society or PIPA requires of your particular practice is a question for your own counsel and the Law Society's practice advisors. Many of the same controls are discussed in our guide to PIPEDA and clinic IT.

Questions

Law firm IT: common questions

Does the Law Society of BC allow lawyers to use cloud services?

The Law Society of BC has published guidance on cloud computing for lawyers. In general, lawyers remain responsible for protecting client confidentiality when information is held by a third-party provider, so the provider, its security controls and your contract with it need to be reviewed. Check the Law Society's current guidance for the details.

Can you support Clio, PCLaw or LEAP?

We support the workstations, network, identity, backup and security around your practice-management and accounting software, and we coordinate with the software vendor on application-level issues. We do not replace the vendor's own support.

Do you serve solo lawyers as well as larger firms?

Yes. Sole practitioners and small firms are the focus. We scope support to the size of the practice rather than forcing a large-firm package.

Where do you provide on-site service for law firms?

From our Abbotsford head office we attend on site across the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland, and provide remote support across Canada.
